EVOLUTION OF SINGLE SCREEN CINEMAS IN MUMBAI

This documentation, produced by Majlis in coordination with UDRI, traces the history of cinema and its role in public culture, livelihood practices and its recognition in the Development Plan as spaces to be preserved.

The maps produced through the UDRI GIS database locate single screen cinemas in Mumbai, as they grew, from 1911 to 2001. The pattern shows that all cinema screens were located in South Mumbai till about 1931 when theatres began to be set up the growing suburban areas mostly occurring close to railway stations.
